Gideon Mantell was a doctor in Lewes. He was also an enthusiastic fossil collector and amateur geologist. His paper on Iguanodon, which had been discovered at Whiteman's Green near Cuckfield, was presented to The Royal Society on the 10th February 1825. This was the 2nd ever paper on a dinosaur, although the term 'Dinosaur' had yet to be coined. The talk will cover The Role of Mantell's Mentors and the many contemporary and eminent persons who Mantell would have known of, and also those he corresponded with. The speaker will be Martin Simpson from the Isle of Wight.
